Formerly the home of a wealthy Milanese family, the 12-room boutique house Relais Villa Vittoria is just a short paddle from George Clooney’s villa in the sleepy village of Laglio. Slate-floored bedrooms are decorated with gauzy white drapes, neutral stone and creamy-grey colours. Outside there’s an infinity pool, terrace and fabulous mulberry garden, while inside there’s a Moroccan-style mini spa with hammam for perfect pampering.

Old world elegance and farmhouse chic meet for an utterly romantic vibe from the parlor of soft leather couches and gilded furnishings to the light-flooded rooms with whitewashed, wood-beamed ceilings and eye-popping lake or hillside vistas. Spend your days sipping Prosecco on the sprawling terrace, taking a dip in the glass-rimmed infinity pool, or ferry hopping nearby towns like Bellagio, Cernobbio, or Varenna. Decorated in chic, sophisticated Italian style by her interior designer daughter, it has cool, airy bedrooms, some with huge, white-painted original beams, a conservatory restaurant serving excellent food, an expansive drawing room with original chandeliers and grand piano, cosy basement taverna and small, attractive spa, plus garden, small pool and romantic gazebo. A luxury hotel in miniature.
Best new small hotels in Italy
Lake Como is famous for its grand hotels; the boutique experience can be hard to find here. Owner Daniela Tagliamonte hits the right note at her waterfront villa, a onetime silk workshop. Eight of the 13 light-filled rooms face the lake, and all have a polished look (whitewashed wooden floors; crisp beige linens). Downstairs there’s an elegant lounge, but most guests can be found outdoors, sunning by the glass-walled infinity pool or sipping tea under the jasmine-covered pergola.
